Circa 1870's, this sweet antique brooch would likely have been bought as a souvenir when visiting the English seaside town of Whitby. Famous for this local Jet which was found in seams along the coast, many workshops existed at the time dedicated to hand carving this most wonderfully glossy mineral into jewels. In a typical naturalistic design which resembles the original Arucaria or 'Monkey Puzzle' tree from which the mineral was formed.
Measures just two inches and closes with the original 'C' clasp.
