A small but perfectly formed token in remembrance of 'Ewald Benedictus Ziervogel ob 8 Dec 1828 aet 19 yrs'. The central rock crystal covered section contains carefully plaited fair hair and is surrounded by a frame of exquisite baisse taille black enamel itself framed by a further chased mount of scrolling gold acanthus.
After some research we discovered that Ewald was born in South Africa of Swedish descent and died and was buried at St Mary in the Castle in Hastings;
'DIED on the 8th December 1828, at Hastings in Sussex (whither he had gone for the benefit of his health preparatory to his proceeding to the University of Edinburgh), after an illness of only a few days, Mr. Ewald Benedictus ZIERVOGEL, aged 19 years; deeply and sincerely regretted by his affectionate Mother and other Relatives and Friends.'
